Jean grew up on a farm near Port Lambton, Ontario. After attending high school in Wallaceburg, she went to teacher’s college in London, Ontario. She taught, full-time and later as a supply teacher, at various schools in Chatham and Middlesex County, including Standing Stone in Oneida. She then worked at the Mount Brydges library where she conducted a very successful Story Time for 3-5-year-olds before her mandatory retirement at age 65.

They operated a farm in the community of South Caradoc, close to Mount Brydges, where Jean lived from July 1952 until November 2022.
