Mark Peters

Obituary of Mark James Kevin Peters

The family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Sakima Mark J.K. Peters Sakoyatakenhas (He Who Helps the People) on Thursday, June 16th, 2022 in his 65th year.

Mark was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and mentor.  He accomplished many things during his life, and he was most proud of his connection to his community, Munsee-Delaware First Nation.

He worked as a Roughneck on the oil rigs in Alberta, as a laborer, logger, social services worker, board member with N'Amerind Friendship Centre, lawyer, and Chief for Munsee-Delaware Nation. His sense of humour was always one of his most unique qualities that many can remember him by. He had an endearing passion for the Leni Lenape community and he sought out his passion by working lovingly as an historian for the Munsee Delaware people. He travelled extensively throughout Leni Lenape territories learning and sharing as a Leni Lenape Knowledge Keeper. He was an avid outdoorsman, canoeist, and an adventure-seeker. He especially loved WeeMac, and Torbay, NFLD.

Loving son to Rosemary Grant (nee:McArthur) and Hubert Peters (predeceased), loving father to Carla Mishibinijima, Jessica Mishibinijima, Justin Peters (Kamiellie), Katelyn Peters, and proud grandfather to Jaden Mishibinijima, Emilia Peters, and Maella Mishibinijima. Dear brother to Amanda Bragg, and Scott Grant. Uncle to Sacha Bragg, Cody Bragg, Alexxis Kydd, Brady Kydd, Jim and Zach Grant. Forever and lovingly remembered by Vivian Cywink-Peters.

Family will receive friends at the Munsee-Delaware Pow Wow Grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 9pm where the Celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Monday, June 20th, 2022 at 11am.  "According to Leni Lenape custom, a Sacred Fire has been lit for Mark at the Munsee Delaware Nation  Pow Wow Grounds. Customary Service to be held each evening until Sunday where relatives and friends are welcomed to join with Mark’s family in the service."
