When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of
dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Daryl at Fanshawe for a number of years. Although we were a generation apart we came to respect one another's standards; mine of the old school and Daryl's of a more modern theme. Bottom line though, we both wanted what was best for the students and we worked together very well. My heart breaks for Daryl's family. His desk was covered in pictures of the family he loved so dearly. I am sad too for all the dear friends and colleagues he has left behind. RIP Big D.

We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Daryl’s passing. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Bec, Charlotte, Cooper, Mackenzie and the Taylor family. We came to know Daryl, through our daughter Erin many years ago. He was a true and dear friend and neighbour to Erin and Rob, both at work and home. He will be very missed by all who knew him. Such a gentle giant.
