My message to my first cousins - Catherine, Linda, Patrick and Ida:
Your Mom was a wonderful, kind woman.
She was soft and gentle and strong at the same time.
Here is one interesting memory I have to share.
When I was attending Oneida class in Toronto at the Native Canadian Centre with Dawn and Bev, sometimes we would get stuck on a word or phrase. Neither Dawn (our teacher) nor Bev were sure how to figure it out.
So there were times I recall when Bev would suggest, "let's call Lois".
So Lois would be on the speaker phone and in her calm voice she would give careful thought to our question and then she would tell us how to say what we wanted in the Onyota'a:ka language.
Now that I think about it, it reminds me of that show Who Wants to be A Millionaire and when a contestant gets stuck, some of them would choose to use their lifeline. And that would be someone who is wise about the matters that relate to the question.
Well your Mom,-- Lois was our Oneida Lifeline. She knew her stuff. When we asked our question, we waited patiently and attentively for the few seconds while she was preparing her answer. We were all ears. We knew with great confidence that she knew the answer for sure. It was 100% certain. She gave us the right words in our cherished language. We never questioned her. From Oneida to Toronto - long distance ---we had our final answer. Yaw^ko Auntie Lois for your wisdom, kindness, patience and giving so freely of your time.
Whenever I would see your Mom in the past 20 years or more, she was always dressed so nicely. With a nice hairdo, a coordinated fashionable outfit and even painted finger nails. She was always surrounded by her children like bees around a sweet flower. She was so well taken care of by her adoring family. All of the respect she was given by everyone who knew her was so well earned.
I know she is going to be in a very nice place in the Spirit World with all of her family and friends and she will forever be surrounded by unconditional love. I think she is probably having a nice visit with my Mom too. Sending you all big bear clan hugs.
