I am so sorry, I only heard of the passing of John from my father (Clive) today. I grew up on stories about John wrestling at UWO, and then when I was older, working for my Dad at his office, John would call sometimes and we'd chat. I'd hear about his travels. We never met, but I always enjoyed chatting with John, sometimes we'd chat for 30 minutes. I wish we could have met at some point. I'm so sorry for your loss.
I just spent another 20 minutes listening to my Dad talk with both excitement and respect for John, and their long long friendship. I also heard a bit about Patrick, and I'm also sorry for his loss as well. I hope as a family you are taking care of each other.

How do you describe a soul as unique, generous of spirit, and caring as John Findley?
He was a tough, courageous guy, a warrior, as he liked to refer to himself. What he never revealed in words but showed through his deeds was a heart as kind and generous as a saint. He wouldn't like me making a religious reference but I don't know a better way of describing a man who always put others before himself.
I didn't know John well for as long as most of his best friends. We first met casually perhaps in the late 1980s but I didn't get to know him until 2006 when I made my fourth comeback to judo, this one after a 30-year absence.
He loved to mock my judo as 'unique.' What he meant was I lacked a certain dedication to the sport that he loved and excelled at, competing for Canada at the world level. Although only a few years older than me, he pushed me in the subtle way he used with errant students as a teacher and the tough-as-nails but still walking-on-eggshells talent he had with First Nations kids who needed someone with a firm hand at the till.
He emailed me daily or more, mostly with jokes and pokes, and called me regularly after the judo club suspended activities to check on me during a period when I went through some personal trials. He refused to let me retreat into a shell. In retrospect, I realize the ambitious business stuff we attempted here and in Brazil wasn't so much to make him money but to get that life spark in me burning anew.
I loved John and will miss him. I didn't fully realize how much until now. I feel blessed having known him. He wouldn't approve of that reference either.
To Linda, Patrick, Bronwyn, his grandkids Avery and Wesley, and to Marilyn: I hope your cherished memories of John provide you with comfort.

Linda and family, so sorry to hear about John's passing. I met John in the early 60's at the YM/YWCA wrestling room. We also did some Judo there as well. Over the years we shared many stories at various wrestling meets, when he was selling meat in the old Sunshine Market grocery store, teaching events or just on the street.
Vivian and I are travelling so won't be able to attend your gathering but I will be thinking of him.

We were friends for over 50 yrs, first met at Wolverine Tube when he was a student worker, our next time meeting was on the judo mat where he gave me a whoopin. Judo remained, where after collapsing, he saved my life with the help of others one night at the dojo. A champion for social rights, an activist for enviromental issues, a debater in many circles==you had better know your stuff against him as he was sharp as a pin. Extremely talented banjo, guitar player/picker which he was a mentor to many including myself. Along with many, Will miss him dearly. Our deepest condolences to Lynda, Patrick, Bronwyn, Marilyn and other family members. Rick and Marilyn McGhee
