Obituary of Harry George Scott
After a valiant battle with cancer at Country Terrace, Komoka on Wednesday, August 19th, 2026, George Scott of Komoka in his 94th year.
Beloved husband and best friend for 63 years of Maxine Scott (nee: Simmons). Loving father of Laurie Scott (the late Donald Langs) and the late Mark Scott (1997). Proud grandpa of Nathan Langs, Amanda Langs, and Jeff Langs. Dear brother-in-law of Harold Matthews (the late Sheila) and the late Raymond Simmons. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Emma Scott (nee: Forsyth) and his siblings Vera Prior (Glen) and Roy Scott.
George started his journey in life during the depression and on the home farm. He often spoke of going to school in a one room schoolhouse and sometimes not having enough money for shoes.
In his younger years he raised hogs with his Dad and then after obtaining more land he became a cash crop farmer with beef. He also shared his love of farming with his son Mark who was inspired to get his A licence then becoming a diesel mechanic. He even eventually let Laurie and Mark have a couple of horses on the old Jones farm for a few years.
He was an avid hunter of deer and fox and belonged to the Delaware Sportsman’s Conservation Association. Following in his Father’s footsteps he became a Mason with the #358 Delaware Lodge.
As a farmer he was a self-taught mechanic, electrician, wood worker, welder and even held his AZ licence for driving truck to ship his own grain along with friends and neighbours grain as well. He created his own grain elevator setup with an elevator leg one hundred feet in the air.
George liked to hold parties and attend them. The more, the merrier. Some even had a roasted hog, baked beans and sweet corn. There would always be music played by Don Lunn and Bill James which he enjoyed greatly.
In his later years when he wasn’t farming anymore peaked his passion for wood working and if you had a birthday or a death in the family you likely were the recipient of one of his famous plaques or if he was visiting you the offering of an orange or a tomato which he bought by the case.
Both George and Maxine joined The Mt. Brydges Homesteaders Club where he displayed his hard work from the previous winter shop projects of refurbished antique tractors and implements. This included a functioning thrashing machine which he was also asked to display at the Western Fair in London. He was passionate about showing and demonstrating farming methods from the good old days. This passion also led to George and Maxine travelling to shows in Ontario and several states to thrashing and toy shows collecting toy versions of tractors, implements and eventually his passion turned to trains.
George’s shop was a gathering place for fellow farmers and friends to have coffee, talk about the crops, maybe borrow a tool or have something fixed.
His kids and grandchildren have many great memories of growing up on a farm whether it was having your own horse or riding in a home-made dune buggy.
A graveside service will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Delaware on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, commencing at 11 am.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at The Delaware Legion Branch 598, 11577 Longwoods Road, Delaware on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, from 12 noon to 3 pm.
