Obituary of Leander Henry Snake
Peacefully surrounded by his loving family at home on Tuesday, May 26th, 2026. Leander “Lee” Snake of Muncee-Delaware Nation in his 69th year.
Lee was a proud member of Munsee-Delaware Nation and a well-known hunter and community helper as years as the garbage person, bus driver, backhoe operator, grave digger, served as a past Councillor to the Nation, and one of the founders of our Annual Traditional Gathering. He was a survivor of Residential School at Mohawks Institute and participated in the Oka Crisis and Ipperwash standoff and also a protester for environment and our natural medicines.
He was a loving father to Kuwawi (Rebecca) Ireland and Kah^tiyostha (Francesca) Snake. He was a loving losótha (grandpa) to Dyson Kechego. And Godson Benjamin Nimham and grandson Benjamin III.
Survived by Sisters Rose Snake and Glenna Macaulay and brothers Richard Snake and Douglas Cooper.
Predeceased by wife Michele Snake-Ireland (2013), daughter Youliwka:yu (Tabitha) Ireland (2024), parents Solomon Snake (1991) and Ina Henry (2021), Sister: Patricia Albert (1961), Brothers: Morley Snake (1965) and Bernard Snake (1977).
Lee was also uncle and great-uncle and a great-great uncle to many nieces and nephews. Adopted nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at the River Road Longhouse, 1035 River Road, Oneida starting Thursday, May 28th after 5pm. Funeral service to follow on Friday, May 29th commencing at 11 am. Interment 400 Thomigo Road, Muncey Ontario.
