I found a dozen photos that Irving left behind in my apartment a few years ago. He kept two photos side by side. Irving riding his bike in one photo. Shawn riding his bike as a child in another photo. Losing his children, literally and physically, through death or disputes, brought him immeasurable pain and torment.
I was too busy with work over the past few years, trying to provide for Vada, to help be the friend
and the coach that he needed to see through this pain.
He always looked to inspire the best in other people, gave second chances, a sofa to crash on, believed in the underdog, said yes instead of no and gave forgiveness. Other people, including myself at times, did not always do the same for him.
When he was at his best, at the boxing club, he was the best coach I ever had. I can still hear feet shuffling in the ring, timing bells beeping and his booming voice, screaming “ALL DAY” and “TOO EASY”. He inspired people to be their best in a passionate and authentic way.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to Dedra, Chalandra, Vada — and all of Irving’s extended family. Also our heartfelt condolences go out to Irving’s beloved fiancée known as “Rocket.”
We know that Irving is now with the Lord Jesus. The following scripture verse shows the heart of our loving God, at a time such as this when a dear one passes away:

it grieves him when they die.”

The ripple effect of the community of misfits he created forged authentic connections, as we grew sometimes painfully into the people we are.
I ended up working in jail, and in segregation sat a man I use to box. Lost and broken, I remembered who he was and tried to get him to remember that person.
Years later mentally destroyed and just trying find any proof a reason to keep plugging, I see that same kid at church and he tells me he remembers me and how it helped him...and I remember myself not who anyone thought I was, not my mistakes. I remembered me.
Thank you to the man the never stopped getting back up, and refused the weight of others labels.

He thought my son how how to box and be strong. My son got silver in the golden gloves . Erv was a good man despite what anyone else said that may have been bad. He was a man .

Jack & I were so sorry to hear of Irving's sudden passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family. May you be comforted by the many memories created over the years. We knew Irving from his days at London First Church of the Nazarene and were happy to have seen and spoke with him one last time when he was in service on March 1st visiting from Toronto.
